Sweetness in the Belly- Camilla Gibb
After completing several non-fiction works about Ethiopia, I treated myself to a novel. I couldn't put this book down. I read the prologue before falling asleep last night, and finished it this afternoon.
We follow Lilly from her adolescence in the Islamic city of Harar in Ethiopia to adulthood in London, after fleeing the country during the Dergue takeover.
Gibb effortlessly takes us back and forth between Harar and London, painting a portrait of racial and societal differences along the way, not turning her head to scenes of horror, but still finding a harmonic conclusion that reaffirms our faith in humanity.
